Are You Interested in the Superfood Hype

Within the fitness industry, it’s well-known that results aren’t forged in the gym, they’re forged in the kitchen. Why? Because your diet is what provides your body with the fuel it needs to exercise, but more importantly, the tools to create a healthy physique. Now, it’s likely that you’ve come across a multitude of different nutritional regimes; some effective, some extreme and some not viable.

But, the one thing that all recommended diets share is the emphasis they place on foods that contain a high nutritional value. Some ingredients with an exceptional level of nutrients, vitamins and minerals are placed into a specific bracket – superfoods. A food will only be labelled as “super” if they prove that they offer an incredible array of health benefits.

With that being said, there’s no real restrictions on what can and cannot be given the superfood status. They don’t necessarily have their own category, they’re just types of food that lie within the existing categories, which is why superfoods exist in a variety of different forms. Most of them are plant-based, granted, but there are within the fish and dairy factions.

Some examples of superfoods…

The area that most people point to first is berries. Whether you’re consuming blueberries, acai berries, goji berries or raspberries, you can rest assured you’re tucking into a superfood. They’re full of fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, but more importantly, they taste absolutely delicious.

Other types of superfood include:

  • Soy
  • Tea
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Dark chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Sweet potato

It’s important not to get carried away and start bulking your diet out with superfoods, though. You see, they are thought to be jam-packed with essential micronutrients, macronutrients, vitamins and minerals and antioxidants, but there are plenty of foods that also have terrific nutritional value without being labelled as a superfood. The best way to enhance your health, improve your fitness and evolve your physique is to figure out a balanced diet.

It’s essential that your diet consists of foods in the right quantity based on your caloric and macronutrient goals. For instance, you don’t want to consume a ton of superfoods because then your protein intake may be lacking.

Benefits of superfoods…

You know they’re going to offer amazing health benefits, otherwise they wouldn’t have been considered a superfood, but what are they? Well, other than complementing a healthy diet, they also combat diseases thanks to the substantial amount of antioxidants that they contain. Studies have suggested that some superfoods can not only reduce your chances of developing a chronic disease, but can actually reverse the effects of them as well.

So, if you find yourself worrying about cancer, heart disease, arthritis, respiratory disease, Parkinson’s, emphysema, stroke, diabetes or immune deficiency, then superfoods can help your body prevent them. Moreover, superfoods attend to bad cholesterol, high blood pressure and skin issues.
